Maintaining Your Zenith Zoysia Lawn

Once your lawn is established, fertilize and water only as necessary to maintain a turf tight enough to resist weed invasion and to keep the grass in healthy condition so that it is producing adequate growth for a fresh, neat appearance.

Fertility

Apply between 2 to 4 lbs. of Nitrogen per 1000 sq. ft. annually, during the growing season. Select  a fertilizer that is labeled for use on Zoysia grass lawns. Do not apply to wet turf to avoid burning. Too much fertility will result in a thatchy and unhealthy lawn.

Mowing

Mow between 1/2 and 1 1/2 inches high. Catch and remove clippings. Never remove more then 1/3 of the leaf at any one cutting. Always use a sharp blade

Watering

Though very drought tolerant, Zoysia grass prefers infrequent deep watering. Do not over water. Click here to see our guide on watering for more information.

Thatch Removal

Periodically (every other year) it may be necessary to remove accumulated thatch and debris. This is best accomplished in the late winter, just before spring green up. Scalp or de-thatch with a commercial machine and remove debris.

Weeds

Zoysia's dense growth can reduce the weed population, but to be sure, use a pre-emergent herbicide in the spring and fall, suing one that is recommended for use on Zoysia lawns on the label.

Pests

Pests can become a problem, especially if Zoysia is not growing in a healthy way: too much fertility, too little food and water, etc. If pests persist, contact the county agent or your local garden center and ask for assistance in identifying the problem and recommended control.
